Our Studio Equipment

This is the equipment that we use to produce our posts, podcasts, and videos.

BOSS Micro DR Digital Recorder

We record all of our podcasts into this recorder from the mixer and then copy the sound file from the recorder to our PC.  We have found that recording directly from the mixer to the PC using the USB Audio Interface produces a less perfect recording (after all, the PC is running other programs at the same time, and audio recording is processor intensive).

This model has a built-in microphone so it serves a dual purpose when we travel, allowing us to "record on the go"

EDIROL UA-1EX USB Audio Interface

We use this device to capture audio directly into the PC from outside sources such as CD, radio, and TV.

SHURE Popper Stopper Pop Filter

Our podcasts sound much better since we started using a pop filter in front of the microphone.

This model was inexpensive, mounts directly onto the mic stand for convienience, and elimates the ‘popping’ sound when we say our P’s and B’s.

Audio-Techinca AT3035 Cardioid Condenser Microphone

A great microphone is arguably the most important peice of equipment for the Podcaster.

This one was in the mid-price range and has a very solid body and produces great sound.  It is a really terrific general use desktop microphone.

Apple 80GB Video iPod MP3 Player

I have owned an iPod for several years now and wouldn’t want to be without it.  This one provides lots of storage and allows us to carry music files for use on the road as we podcast when travelling.

Sony MDR-7502 Dynamic Stereo Headphones

Our headphones are stereo and very easy on the ears.  They are light-weight and comfortable. This model was very reasonably priced.

BOSE PM-1 Portable CD Player

We use a portable CD player for both studio and ‘on the road’ recording.  It provides background music, when needed, for our podcasts. We run the CD player through one of the channels of our mixer so that we can edit the track seperately.

This model includes anti-skip technology and has the great sound quality that BOSE is famous for while being moderately priced.

dbx 266XL Compressor/Gate

Currently we only use one channel of the compressor, but two are avaiable.  We have the compressor set up on the same channel as our microphone.  It makes a tremendous difference in the quality of our podcast sound.

While not absolutely necessary, a compressor provides that true "professional studio" sound that we weren’t able to achieve through our audio editing software alone.  It gives a true richness and boost to voice recording!

Yamaha MG8/2FX Mixing Console

And last, but certainly not least, our mixer. We chose a mid-price range and a brand that we knew to have great tech support and repair services.

The mixer does so much work during our podcast recording. This one features 4 channel stereo capabilities and includes built-in effects.
